How to secure your mobile or tablet
Lock it down:
- Enable a strong screen lock: This is the first line of defence. Use a PIN, password, fingerprint, iris scan, or facial recognition. Avoid simple patterns or easily guessable codes.
- Enable auto-lock: Set your device to automatically lock after a short period of inactivity, further reducing the window of opportunity for someone to access your device if they get their hands on it.
- Software and Updates
• Update your OS: Operating system updates often include security patches, so keeping OS up to date is crucial. Enable automatic updates if possible.
• Update your apps: Outdated apps can have security vulnerabilities, so keep them updated as well. Enable automatic updates in the app store settings.
- Be app-savvy
• Download apps only from trusted sources: The official app store for your device (Google Play Store for Android or App Store for iOS) is the safest place to download apps. Be wary of downloading apps from third-party sources.
• Review app permissions before installing: Pay attention to the permissions requested by an app before installing it. Does the app really need access to your location or microphone? If something seems suspicious, don't install the app.
- Other security measures
• Install a mobile security app: Consider using a security app that can offer additional features like malware scanning, anti-theft protection, and secure browsing.
