Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security system that adds an extra step to logging in to accounts. Instead of just using a password, MFA requires two or more verification factors, making it much harder for hackers to gain access even if they steal your password.
- How MFA works:
1. You enter your username and password like usual.
2. The system asks for a second verification factor, such as:
a. A one-time code (OTP) from your phone, SMS, or security key
b. Biometric factor like fingerprint scan
c. Answering a security question
3. If the second factor matches what the system has on record, you are granted access.
- MFA benefits include:
• Stronger defence against cyberattacks
• Protection for sensitive information
• Wide availability on many online services
If you're concerned about online security, enabling MFA on your important accounts is a good idea.
